BBC Good Food Show Winter 2022

BBC Good Food Show Winter 2022

The BBC Good Food Show, Winter 2022 held at the NEC, Birmingham was one of the most popular foodie shows of the year attracting thousands of visitors to catch intimate showcases and demonstrations from esteemed celebrity chefs including James Martin, John Torode, Michel Roux Jr., Gennaro Contaldo, and Jane Dunn of Jane’s Patisserie fame.

As well as the live theatre of the ‘Big Kitchen’ showcasing these major talents, there were numerous other more intimate live areas to catch your favourite chefs such as Get Baking, BBC Wine Club Tasting Theatre, The Festive Kitchen and more as well as interesting workshops for an engaging hands-on experience. These experiences were complemented by hundreds of F&B stalls and exhibition stands offering everything from cooking accessories to entire kitchens keeping the delighted crowds entertained.

Protec is proud to have been appointed as the single accredited AV supplier to the BBC Good Food Shows and we supplied all the technical elements for the live feature theatres and stands.

We were honoured to support our client Jess, of River Street Media.

“Working with Simon and the Protec team is always a pleasure; they are a trusted and experienced show partner who always provide first-class service. The team are friendly, professional, and always happy to help find a solution to the inevitable challenges that occur on live events. They fit seamlessly into the show production team and their attention to detail and passion for the job is evident in the end result.
Projects are delivered on time and on budget, and I know that once I have Simon on board, there’s one less thing for me to worry about!”

Jessica Elliman, Production Manager, River Street Media

Simon Beaty, a senior production manager at Protec explained the technical solutions and the importance of selecting the right crew for the job.

“Choosing the right people is essential to mitigate risk on a live event. The crew consisted of a mixture of experienced technicians, with a long history of working on this and other similar shows, and highly skilled local crew who are all an integral part of this event.
In the Big Kitchen (main theatre seating up to 1000) we had a flown screen with a high contrast laser projector to relay show content and live camera shots from on stage and a remote hot head camera flown from the truss taking overhead shots of the celebrity chefs at work. Audio came in the form of an L-Acoustics Arcs focus 8 cabinets per hang line array controlled by a Yamaha digital desk and a mix of Sennheiser mics and IEMs for the on-stage host and the celebrity chefs. LX was powered by an Avolites digital console with a mixture of LED moving heads and fixed panels to wash and highlight the stage area from the overhead truss. We also installed the house lights and feature LX from the downstage truss to create the full theatre experience.”

Protec’s video solutions included Panasonic 13k laser projection, Panasonic hothead cameras and Roland switchgear. The audio team deployed L-Acoustics Arcs Focus line array with D&B front fills on the main stage controlled by a Yamaha QL5. The smaller activations and stands were set up with D&B systems. A Sennheiser mic package and IEMs completed the audio solutions. Lighting solutions included the versatile ClayPaky A.leda B-EYE K10s all controlled by an Avolites console.

Simon shared his experience working on this event and the value of building lasting relationships with clients.

“I have worked with River Street and Jess for many years and every show is more enjoyable than the last. It’s more of a family than a client-supplier relationship and it goes from strength to strength every year. Communication is clear and easy and we have a great dynamic. They put complete trust in me as far as technical design and delivery are concerned and I will always give 100% in my pursuit of our combined goal of making each show a sensation. To say I love working with River Street and Jess is an understatement, they are all part of my life now and may we keep working together for many years to come. I would like to express my gratitude to the Protec team and crew who supported the successful delivery of this event. As I said, the right people with the correct expertise is vital. Well done to everyone involved!”
